Iran hosting 12th APPU Conference

IRNA Tehran, presiding the 32-member Asian Pacific Postal Union (APPU) after 17 years, is hosting the 12th congress of the body on Monday.


Iran will preside the body for a period of four years from 2017 before Thailand assumes its periodical presidency.

The bloc is the biggest union in Asia-Pacific region and the main policy making entity on developing and improving postal procedures.

Iran Post Company declared its readiness for hosting the meetings in the 11th conference in 2013 in India. The offer was accepted officially in the congress.

Attempts made by Iranian government to increase engagement with the international community in the light of implementation of Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) cleared the way for promoting its Post Company's status in global communities.

Managing Director of Iran Post Company Hossein Mehri had previously announced that after JCPOA implementation, the international paths of the company increased to 103 from 58, and from a one aerial post line to 5.

The E-commerce software for interaction with 180 countries is being piloted in Iran Post Company, according to the official.

Iran hopes to create the ground for expanding postal cooperation among member states of the APPU by hosting the conference.

In 1961, 18 countries signed the Asian-Oceanic Postal Convention to create the APPU. Now the body has 32 members and the President is selected at the APPU Congress every four years.

Electronic serveices, national and international E-commerce, developing International Financial Services (IFS), sustainable development, singing memoranda of understanding with some members, including South Korea are on the agenda of today Conference.

Introducing GNAF system to the members to export Irans technical know-how, expanding educational cooperation in APPU based on the capacities of the Iranian Post and Telecommunication College will be considered in the Conference in Tehran.

Tureky, Switzerland and France will observe the Congress which is going to be held on 3-7 July.
