Zarif's correspondence with Mogherini over US breach of JCPOA: MP

IRNA - A senior Iranian lawmaker said Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif's recent letter to EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini was a reaction to the West's default on the nuclear deal between Tehran and the P5+1 group.

Irans Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission spokesman Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said both the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and Majlis ratification have predicted measures to deal with any default on the side of 5+1 Group of countries and Zarif's letter was part of this measures.

Commenting on the effect of sending the letter, the MP said it is not the fist time that Iran has sent a letter to Mogherini, whos also in charge of the Joint Commission of the nuclear deal. The commission is tasked with monitoring the implementation of the accord.

He added Iran should pursue legal and political measures regarding the US violation.

'I have sent Ms. Mogherini two letters on the US violations of their obligations and the effects of their destructive policies during the past two weeks,' said the parliamentarian.

Zarif told reporters on June 12 upon arriving in Oslo airport and in response to a question regarding possible new sanctions against Iran in the US Senate that, 'The issue was discussed in the last joint commission, and it will be explored in the upcoming session, referring to the commission which monitors the implementation of the nuclear agreement singed in 2015 between Iran and major powers of the world, known as Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, China, France and Britain plus Germany).

The implementation process of the nuclear agreement is going on smoothly, as Iran and the European Union countries are committed to it, he noted.

The US backtracking from its commitments is not a new subject, and we do not have such economic ties with them, except for aircraft deal, Zarif said, adding that the deal has been going forward despite Washington's attempts to impede it.
