Sputnik - On June 7, Tehran was hit my coordinated terror attacks in which 17 people were reportedly killed and around 50 others were injured.

Unidentified attackers opened fire insidethe Iranian Parliament inTehran and took several people hostage. In a parallel development, armed individuals attacked the Mausoleum ofAyatollah Khomeini, the leader ofthe 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Sputnik Italia spoke withPejman Abdolmohammadi, an expert onIran and a researcher atthe London School ofEconomics and Political Science, abouthow these recent attacks will have grave consequences onthe internal politics ofIran and the region asa whole.
This attack occurred duringa very difficult moment, when the balance ofpower inthe Middle East is being put tothe test. I believe that the terror attacks inIran will have serious consequences forthe balance ofpower inthe Persian Gulf, asthere is a risk ofescalation oftensions betweenIran and Saudi Arabia, Abdolmohammadi said.

He further said that interms ofIrans domestic policy it is possible tosee a strengthening ofconservative forces and a slight reduction inthe influence ofpragmatism ofPresident Ruhani.
It seems tome that the new strategy ofthe Trump administration will hit the countries ofthe Persian Gulf hard and change the balance ofpower inthe Middle East, Abdolmohammadi said.

According tohim, Trump's first move inthe region has been toweaken Iran and Qatar; however the analyst feels that the story does not end there.

The next player inthis shake-up will be Saudi Arabia itself. I do not believe that the alliance betweenTrump and Saudi Arabia will last a long time, it is rather a short-term strategic alliance, the analyst said.

He added that Russia currently has an opportunity tostrengthen its influence inQatar and Iran.

The analyst said that withouta doubt, Russia's influence inIran is already quite strong, butnow Russia can strengthen its position even further.
Russia should take intoaccount the interests ofChina though, which, most likely, will want totake advantage ofthe political chaos inthe region, he said.

As forthe situation inIran followingthe terror attacks, Abdolmohammadi said that Iranians are waiting forthe government's response.
These terrorist attacks brought the crisis ofPersian nationalism tothe forefront; therefore the reaction onpart ofthe Republic is expected. It is no longer talks aboutissues betweenShiites and Sunnis; the conflict has moved toanother level, it is betweenArabs and Persians now, Abdolmohammadi said

It is also quite possible that Iran will react tothese attacks ineconomic terms bygoing againstsome countries ofthe Persian Gulf, inparticular againstSaudi Arabia.

On Wednesday, coordinated terror attacks were staged inthe Iranian Parliament, aswell asthe mausoleum ofImam Khomeini inTehran. According tomedia reports, atleast 17 people were killed and around50 others injured inthe assaults. Daesh reportedly claimed responsibility forboth terror acts.
