Sputnik News- Beijing supports Tehran's aspirations to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.





China supports Iranian application tobecome a full member ofthe Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Assistant Foreign Minister Li Huilai said Monday.
"Iran is an SCO observer country. For a long time, Iran has been actively participating invarious important events inthe framework ofthe SCO. Iran has made a positive contribution tothe development ofthe SCO. The Chinese side highly appreciates this. The Chinese side welcomes and expresses support forthe desire ofthe Iranian side tobecome a full member ofthe SCO," Li Huilai said ata special briefing dedicated tothe upcoming SCO summit.


The assistant minister added that the issue ofIran's accession tothe organization would be "carefully considered" atthe meeting instrict accordance withthe existing rules ofthe SCO and onthe basis ofconsultations ofall parties.

Iran currently has an observer status withinSCO. In 2008, the country applied forfull membership, butthe organization refused toconsider the application amidUN sanctions againstIran overits nuclear program.

The SCO is an intergovernmental international organization, established onJune 15, 2001 inShanghai byKazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Russia and Uzbekistan. At the summit inUzbekistan inJune 2016, the SCO leaders signed memorandums onthe accession ofIndia and Pakistan tothe organization.

The SCOs 2017 summit will be held inAstana onJune 8-9.
