Palestinian issue pivotal in Muslim unity: Iranian official

Tasnim – The head of the Intifada (Palestinian uprising) and Quds Center at Iran’s Islamic Propagation Coordination Council said the issue of Palestine plays a major role in promoting unity among Muslim nations.

“Despite extensive attempts and numerous plots hatched by the global arrogance (the US) and international Zionism in diverting public opinion from the crimes of the Zionists, Palestine is still the core issue of the Islamic world,” Ramezan Sharif said in a speech in Tehran on Tuesday.

He further pointed to the International Quds Day, an annual event held across the world to show solidarity with Palestinians, and said “the glorious day” provides an opportunity for the Muslim community every year to condemn the occupying Zionist regime of Israel and its oppression of Palestinians.

Sharif also emphasized that one of the best functions of the International Quds Day is that it prevents the issue of Palestine from sliding into oblivion.

He went on to say that the Palestinian issue and the campaign against the Israeli regime play a pivotal role in promoting unity among Muslim societies.

On International Quds Day, rallies are held in different parts of the world and demonstrators express their solidarity with the Palestinian people and opposition to the occupation of the Palestinian territories by the Zionist regime of Israel.

The day is also seen as the legacy of the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, who officially declared the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan as International Quds Day back in 1979.
