Trump departs Israel without mentioning US embassy move

Sputnik - In spite of a campaign promise to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to a location in the hotly contested city of Jerusalem, US President Donald Trump has departed from his visit to the country with no mention of the shift.

Prior toTrump's departure fromTel Aviv onTuesday he gave a farewell speech that included plenty ofpolitical boilerplate butno specifics, particularly withregard tothe highly charged political promise ofmoving the US embassy inIsrael fromTel Aviv, the nation's financial, tech and business hub, toJerusalem.

"What a heritage, what heritage," Trump declared inhis speech. "The ties ofthe Jewish people tothis holy land are ancient and eternal. They date back thousands ofyears," he said, asreported bythe Jerusalem Post.

"I make this promise toyou," added the US president, "My administration will always stand withIsrael." In a pause followingthis remark, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spontaneously grabbed Trump's hand and shook it vigorously.

Trump's remarks took a darker turn while speaking ofthe continued violence withinthe country, stating that Israel is a nation inwhich "school children [] must run tothe bomb shelters withfear butwith speed. ISIS targets Jewish neighborhoods, synagogues and Iran's leaders routinely call forIsrael's destruction," beforereferring tohimself inthe third person byasserting: "Not withDonald J Trump."

After naming himself, the US president paused forbreath while the handpicked audience erupted intoan applause, which rapidly swelled toa standing ovation, while the Israeli prime minister grinned and pumped his fist inthe air.

"I likeyou, too," Trump responded, cited byJpost.com.
But no mention was made bythe US president ofthe embassy move, and many Israeli officials came away disappointed, asTrump headed towardEurope onAir Force One tocontinue his nine-day foreign junket, his first trip outsidethe US sincebecoming president.

Netanyahu is known tobe hoping togain support inthe US forthe embassy move, asit would be interpreted asvalidating Israel's 1967 annexation ofthe eastern section ofJerusalem, and a slap inthe face toPalestine's original claims onthe region.

Ron Dermer, Israel's ambassador tothe US, claimed that moving the American embassy fromTel Aviv toJerusalem "will cause [Palestine] tounderstand that Israel will be here forever withJerusalem asits capital," cited bythe Times ofIsrael.

Trump campaigned ona pledge tomove the US embassy insupport ofIsrael, buthas sincebacked away fromthe promise, particularly afterPalestine observed that the move would imply a prejudice onthe part ofthe US and hinder Washington's ability tobroker peace betweenthe two countries.
