Rouhani being in power to benefit Iran-Azerbaijan ties

Azer News | Kamila Aliyeva: The May 19 presidential elections showed that the Islamic Republic will further follow the path of liberalization, political and social reforms and democratic freedoms as the incumbent Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, beat his rivals in this race.

As many as 23.549 million Iranians voted for Rouhani (57 percent), while his main rival, former Prosecutor General Ebrahim Raeisi, earned 15.786 million votes (38.5 percent).

Rouhani is the one who led the country out of most sanctions and restored relations with Western countries. He fulfilled his promise to solve the problem of the Iranian nuclear program.

During his presidency, Iran has turned into a country with which it is possible to have affairs, and it is evidenced by Western investors, who rushed to conclude deals on the Iranian market. Undoubtedly, this brought great benefits to Iran itself, from the creation of new jobs to the renewal of its air fleet.

Being a far-sighted politician, who is open to new formats of cooperation that will benefit the country, Rouhani achieved success at the regional level as well.

After the meeting of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev with his counterparts from Russia and Iran - Vladimir Putin and Hassan Rouhani in Baku in August 2016, the three leaders agreed to form new tripartite regional format that has every chance to become one of the most important factors in regional policy.

Given the long-term prospects for such cooperation, Rouhanis victory in the elections is a favorable outcome for Baku, since he is familiar to the country's leadership and Rouhani who the one who initiated new joint projects with Azerbaijan.

During his presidency the economic relations between Iran and Azerbaijan reached a qualitatively new level. Iran is going to build several plants in Azerbaijan, while Azerbaijan is investing in the construction of a railway that will connect the two countries.

Tehran's position in the Karabakh conflict is unlikely to change. The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and stands for a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the norms and principles of international law.
