Iran unveils new military geography projects
Tasnim Irans defense minister on Monday unveiled three strategic projects developed by the local experts at the military geography institutes.

During an event in Tehran, Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan unveiled the new projects, including Irans first domestic geoportal, a system for calibration of satellite altimetry, and the first phase of a local network of permanent border posts.

According to the minister, the homegrown geoportal provides online and updated services to users for finding geographic information and positioning data for various purposes.

The satellite altimetry calibration system would also allow for the measurement of water depth in the oceans, seas and gulfs with high accuracy, which is a necessary task in controlling coastlines with satellites, he added.

As regards the local positioning network, Dehqan said it can be utilized for a range of fields, such as military navigation and positioning, border control, dynamics of the Earth, crisis management, prediction of earthquakes and landslides, meteorology, atmospheric water vapor estimation, transportation and traffic control, and agriculture.

He also noted that the first phase of the local positioning network has been launched along the coasts of Makran in the countrys southeasternmost corner by establishing eight permanent stations equipped with advanced technological gear.

Brigadier General Dehqan finally emphasized that one of the Defense Ministrys top priorities is to boost the armed forces intelligence capabilities and update the countrys positioning data in the military sphere.
