MNA � Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland in a statement on Sat. following Iran�s presidential election welcomed Pres. Rouhani�s commitment to continue implementing the nuclear deal.


�Following the re-election of Hassan Rouhani as president of Iran, Canada welcomes President Rouhani�s commitment to continue implementing Iran�s nuclear obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and to improve the lives of ordinary Iranians,� Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, said in a statement on Saturday.

�Canada will continue to advance its values and interests when engaging with Iran, including respect for human rights and a peaceful resolution to conflicts affecting the region,� she added.

President Hassan Rouhani was re-elected for the second term in office following his landslide election victory�through presidential polls held on Friday. He obtained 57.13 percent of the ballots by garnering�over 23 million votes.

Iranian Foreign Ministry made serious�efforts to make it possible for the 400,000 Iranian population in Canada to cast their votes for the all-important election, but due to severed diplomatic ties Canada refused to have polling stations which rules indicate to be set up at Iran�s diplomatic missions in that country. A number of Iranians eager to vote had to cross the border to vote in the US with 55 polling stations placed there.

Under Trudeau government, Iran and Canada are set on re-establishing diplomatic relations.
