Spokesman: Negotiations with Canada to continue

IRNA Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi said on Monday that many Iranian citizens residing in Canada wanted to attend presidential election, so diplomatic steps and wide range of efforts were made in this direction.

Last week, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif talked with his Canadian counterpart Chrystia Freeland over phone, but due to the shortage of time and also because of Canada's civil law the request was not possible.

Qasemi added that Canada declared its good will, which is ready for help, but there would not be any polling station or ballot box in Canada for the upcoming election.

The foreign ministry spokesman said that relations between Iran and Canada were severed during former government, so we have no political relations with Canada and we had no polling station there in Presidential election of year 1392 (Iranian calendar) either.

Concerning reasons for Canadian delegation visit to Tehran, Qasemi said it was continuation of the old discussions made in New York and also talks we had with Canada concerning reviewing and settling some of the remaining problems during previous years.

The spokesman added that last week we had detailed negotiations with Canadian delegation and it is due to be continued.
