EU climate commissioner in Tehran for energy talks

Tasnim European Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete arrived in the Iranian capital to enhance business relations between Iran and the EU and lay the ground for further cooperation and joint partnerships in the energy sector.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Arias Canete arrived in Tehran on Saturday.

Upon his arrival, the EU official opened the first-ever Iran-EU Business Forum on sustainable energy. The forum has gathered more than 50 European companies and business associations and some 40 Iranian energy companies to enable business relations and partnerships between Iran and the EU.

The forum also aims to provide a platform for investors and businesses to look into investment opportunities for clean energy, renewables, energy efficiency and energy conservation actions in Iran.

During his two-day visit, Canete will open the high-level conference on climate change, which will bring together Iranian and European policy-makers as well as representatives from International organizations, the official website of the European Commission reported.

The aim of the conference is to review progress within the Paris Agreement and discuss the role of clean energy in the transition to a low-carbon economy and urgent actions needed to adapt to the consequences of climate change.

Canete is also scheduled to hold talks with Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi, Masoumeh Ebtekar, Iran's vice president and head of the Environmental Protection Organization, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh, and Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian.

Following the conclusion and implementation of the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and six world powers, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the EU and Iran have boosted bilateral relations and launched cooperation in different fields, including energy.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (China, France, Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, United States) reached a conclusion on the JCPOA in July 2015 and started to implement it in January 2016.
