US 'Walking on the Razor's Edge' as uncertainty over ties with Iran looms

Sputnik News- Earlier this week, United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson harshly criticized Irans policy and the final agreement on the Iranian nuclear program. According to political analyst Dmitry Solonnikov, such criticism is a sign of Washingtons support for its allies in the region.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA) does not achieve its goal ofkeeping Iran fromobtaining a nuclear weapon, Tillerson told reporters onWednesday.

"The JCPOA fails toachieve the objective ofnon-nuclear Iran. It only delays their goal ofbecoming a nuclear state," the State Secretary said.
Tillerson added that the JCPOA ignored all other serious threats fromIran.

He also accused Tehran ofsponsoring terrorism, cyberattacks and human rights violations.

"Iran is the worlds leading state sponsor ofterrorism and is responsible forintensifying multiple conflicts and undermining US interests incountries such asSyria, Yemen, Iraq, and Lebanon, and continuing tosupport attacks againstIsrael," Tillerson said.

Earlier onWednesday, the White House announced President Donald Trump had ordered a 90-day interagency review ofthe JCPOA that will evaluate Iran's compliance withthe deal.

Moreover, a day earlier, the State Department issued a statement saying that asof April 18 Tehran complies withall its obligations underthe agreement.

Trump has long been known asa vocal critic ofthe Iranian nuclear agreement, describing it asa "bad deal" and calling fora revision.

On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said that Trump had ordered a 90-day interagency review ofthe JCPOA that will evaluate suspension ofsanctions related toIran.

According toDmitry Solonnikov, director ofthe Institute forModern State Development, this new surge inanti-Iranian sentiments inWashington is related toUS support forits allies inthe Middle East.
"In this situation, Trump first tries tomake good onhis promises before, first ofall, Israel and Saudi Arabia. Trumps criticism is focused onTehrans policy towardsthese two countries, inparticular Irans actions inLibya and Yemen. Washington regards the threats coming fromLibya and Yemen toIsrael and Saudi Arabia asstrategic," Solonnikov said inan interview withRadio Sputnik.

What is more, according tothe expert, Iran is onthe verge ofa presidential election and Washington is teetering onthe edge.
"As I see it, the US is trying towalk onthe razors edge. On the one hand, Washington shows support forits strategic allies inthe region. On the other hand, the US does not want the fundamentalists toreturn topower inTehran. This is why any serious decisions have been delayed for90 days," Solonnikov pointed out.

He explained that if the whole "architecture" built afterthe Iranian nuclear agreement is ruined then President Hassan Rouhanis positions will be seriously weakened.

"In this case, the US would have toface firm opposition withinIran if afterthe election the fundamentalists came topower. Washington does not want that, and it will wait forthree months, and then will try toreach a deal withthe new Iranian government," Solonnikov said.

On July 142015, Iran and the six international mediators reached a historic agreement onthe settlement ofthe long-term Iranian nuclear problem. The JCPOA was adopted, the implementation ofwhich removes the previously imposed economic and financial sanctions bythe UN Security Council, the US and the European Union fromIran. The plan came intoeffect onJanuary 16, 2016.
