Russian firms call on Iran to reduce more Tariffs to top up booming trade

Sputnik - Iranian-Russian trade relations are set to rise further this year after increasing almost twofold in 2016, Alexander Maksimov, honorary representative of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Iran, told Sputnik.

In 2016, the volume oftrade betweenRussia and Iran increased by70 percent incomparison withthe previous year, thanks tothe removal ofbarriers totrade, Alexander Maksimov, honorary representative ofthe Russian Chamber ofCommerce and Industry inIran, told Sputnik.

Last year's bilateral trade was worth $2.2 billion, most ofwhich was comprised ofRussian exports ofmachinery, equipment, transport, food and metals. Iranian food exports toRussia made upjust $0.3 billion ofthe trade balance.
"We think the increase intrade is connected withthe improvement inbilateral relations betweenour countries and the growing interest fromRussian and Iranian businesspeople injoint commercial activities. In addition, the two governments are creating the necessary trade conditions withthe opening ofspecialized banks, joint ventures, free trade zones, free economic zones, the restoration oftransport links and the introduction ofnew measures including the creation of 'green corridors' and the easing ofthe visa regime," Maksimov said.

In January, Russian exports toIran ofmachinery increased by7 percent and high-technology goods by3.7 percent incomparison witha year earlier. The Russian Chamber ofCommerce and Industry is keen forthe increased co-operation tocontinue and tothis end wants tosee Iran undertake measures tofurther ease bilateral trade, including a relaxation ofits customs regulations.

"In 2017, there has been a sharp increase inthe abovesectors primarily due torecently signed contracts inthe transport sector (for the construction ofroads and bridges), forhigh-technology equipment including oil production and refining, aswell asnew contracts forthe repair ofaviation and rail equipment and energy systems, forexample, inthe nuclear sphere."
"Trade turnover can also be increased withoutadditional state intervention, however, it is very important that Iran reduce customs duties and remove non-tariff barriers, such asthe requirements foradditional certificates and limits onthe supply ofRussian wheat, which led toa sharp reduction inthe volume ofRussian exports in2016."

Maksimov said that a range ofprojects are being planned which will further increase bilateral trade inthe transport and energy sectors.
"The implementation ofjoint industry projects inthe coming years, particularly the participation ofRussian oil and gas companies inthe development of11 deposits inIran, will increase the amount ofbilateral trade betweenour countries upto $10 billion."

Russia and Iran have also been stepping uptheir co-operation inthe services industry. Last autumn Russian banks said they were making preparations toenter the Iranian market followingthe lifting ofsanctions associated withIran's nuclear program.

In December, Russia Energy Minister Alexander Novak told the Iran-Russia Trade Conference that the two countries' central banks have been are working closely together and allowed ten large banks toresume activities inIran and Russia, Mehr News reported.

Bahram Amirahmadiyan ofthe Russia-Iran Friendship Society told Sputnik Persian that further banking co-operation betweenthe two countries would enable them tocarry outbilateral trade inlocal currencies rather thanin dollars or euros.

"Of course, the prospect ofRussian banks opening inIran is very attractive and important because it can widen and improve our economic cooperation. At the moment, all banking operations betweenRussia and Iran are carried outin dollars or euros. It's very inconvenient, because all these operations are controlled either bythe EU or US central banks," Amirahmadiyan said.
