Astana talks especially urgent in light of alleged Idlib attack - Mogherini

Sputnik News- The Astana talks on Syrian settlement are important and especially urgent in light of an alleged chemical attack in Idlib, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Wednesday.

The Syrian National Coalition ofRevolution and Opposition Forces claimed that nearly 80 people were killed onTuesday and some 200 injured ina chemical weapon attack inthe Idlib province, blaming the Syrian army forthe incident. A source inthe Syrian army later told Sputnik that the army did not have chemical weapons and the allegations could be part ofanti-Damascus propaganda.
"The task undertaken inAstana byRussia, Turkey and now Iran is important, increasingly urgent. The attack inIdlib makes it even more evident," Mogherini told reporters.


Kazakhstan's capital city Astana has hosted three rounds oftalks onSyrian settlement brokered byRussia, Turkey and Iran, held onJanuary 23-24, February 15-16 and March 14-15. During the talks, the participants focused onupholding the latest ceasefire deal and agreed toset upa ceasefire monitoring group. The next roundis expected totake place inearly May.
