ZTE corporation pleads guilty to illegally sending US Tech items to Iran

Sputnik - ZTE Corporation has admitted in court that it has been violating US sanctions on technology sales to Iran, the Department of Justice claimed.


WASHINGTON (Sputnik) A Chinese telecommunication company, ZTE Corporation, has admitted incourt that it has been violating US sanctions ontechnology sales toIran, the Department ofJustice said ina press release.


"ZTE Corporation pleaded guilty today toconspiring toviolate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) byillegally shipping US-origin items toIran, obstructing justice and making a material false statement," the release stated onWednesday.


According toa court document, ZTE secured contracts withIran forillegal shipments inDecember 2010. Under the contracts, the Chinese company agreed todeliver the self-developed equipment, and receive payments forthe projects and oversee the entire network.

ZTE temporarily stopped unauthorized sales ofAmerican equipment toIran in2012, butthen resumed its business and renewed licenses nearly a year after. The company attempted toconceal all information related todealings withIranian customers, the release noted.

The corporation will now pay nearly $900 million infines tothe US government, the release added.
