Second day of Astana talks starts with arrival of Russian, Iranian delegations

Sputnik - Consultations on Syria in Astana have entered the second day with the arrivals of the Russian and Iranian delegations to the talks venue, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Wednesday.


ASTANA (Sputnik) A joint session ofall participants is expected around1.00 2.00 pm local time (07:00-08:00 GMT).


The Russian delegation is headed byspecial presidential envoy forSyria Alexander Lavrentiev, while the Damascus delegation is headed bySyria's Envoy tothe United Nations Bashar Jaafari.

Iran is represented byDeputy Foreign Minister forArab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari, while Turkey is represented byForeign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Sedat Onal.

Syria's armed opposition has so far refused toattend the new meeting onSyria inthe Kazakh capital.

The agenda ofthe third roundof the talks inAstana presupposed that the delegations ofthe Syrian authorities and armed opposition aswell asthe international mediators, such asRussia, Turkey and Iran would focus onthe map ofterrorists' presence inthe war-torn state.

The first roundof Astana talks onSyria brokered byRussia, Turkey and Iran were held onJanuary 23-24 and resulted ina Moscow-Tehran-Ankara agreement onthe establishment ofa trilateral mechanism tomonitor the ceasefire inSyria.

The second roundof the Astana talks took place onFebruary 15-16, withthe participants agreeing toset upa ceasefire monitoring group, encompassing Iran, Russia and Turkey, that would report tothe United Nations.

The third roundof intra-Syrian talks inAstana, taking place onMarch 14-15, will include consultations onthe first day and a plenary session onWednesday.
