Medieval residential catacombs unearthed by archaeologists in Iran
Sputnik- Archaeologists in central Iran have discovered underground living quarters carved into a mountain. It looks like the construction dates back to the Middle Ages.


According tothe press service ofIrans Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism, the residential catacombs date back fromthe 12th to13th century. They were found inthe province ofMarkazi nearthe Robat Aghaj village, IRNA news agency reported.


According tothe head ofthe archaeological group, Majid Montazer Zohouri, the underground area consists oftwo main corridors, running fromnorth tosouth and fromeast towest. The length ofeach is approximately 90 meters and the width is 1.5 meters.


Along the corridor walls, separate rooms have been carved out and so far ten such rooms have been found. All the rooms vary intheir surface area and shape.

?Except forone room, which was built inthe form ofa cross and apparently served asa common place, the rest ofthe rooms were inhabited bypeople.
In the area ofthe catacombs, archaeologists also discovered metal objects that could have served ashinges forwooden doors, fragments ofglass, beads and bone remains.


Zohouri said that todate, the search fornew artifacts has been suspended asthe first stage ofexcavations has come toan end. However, digging will continue later this year.
