US Coalition envoy considers Russia, Iran, Turkey 'main influencers' in Syria

Sputnik- Russia, Turkey and Iran are key players in Syrian conflict settlement, the US special presidential envoy for the US-led coalition against Daesh, Brett McGurk, said Sunday at the Munich Security Conference.

MUNICH (Sputnik) The first roundof the intra-Syrian peace talks inKazakhstan's capital ofAstana were held onJanuary 23-24, resulting inMoscow-Tehran-Ankara agreement onestablishment ofa trilateral mechanism tomonitor the ceasefire inSyria.

The talks brokered byRussia, Iran and Turkey brought together the representatives ofthe Syrian government and the armed opposition groups forthe first time sincethe beginning ofthe Syrian war in2011.
"I think, the Astana track having Russia, Turkey and Iran is very important, because inmany parts ofSyria, where the civil war is raging those are the main influencers onthe ground," McGurk said.

McGurk's comment came inresponse toUN Special Envoy forSyria Staffan de Misturas remark onthe role ofthe White House intackling the Syrian crisis, made atthe Munich Security Conference panel onSyria.
De Mistura said the new US administration was revising its operations inSyria. "Potential inclusion ofa new type ofdevelopment betweenRussia and the US onthe Syrian file and how toexpand the ceasefire intosomething much more concrete plus fighting Daesh depends onknowing where the US is," he said.

McGurk, who represents the White House atthe coalition, argued the UN should not expect that Washington would come upwith a one-size-fits-all solution.

The deescalation inSyria might lead toSyrian conflict resolution, butit should be reinforced, he said. "There might be some opportunities simply because ofthe deescalatory cycle that we have seen, butwe really would afterreinforce this."

The Syrian ceasefire that came intoforce onDecember 30 is backed byRussia and Turkey, and has been holding upin general, despitecontinued reports ofviolations. The UN Security Council passed a resolution inDecember supporting the effort.
