Iran to supply more handmade Persian rugs to US despite potential trade tussle

Sputnik- Iran will continue to supply handmade carpets to the United States despite the possible tightening of import rules by the new US Administration, according to the Iranian news agency IRNA.


Iranian entrepreneurs plan togo ahead withthe sale oftheir country's hand-woven rugs tothe United States amidfears ofPresident Donald Trump's possible tightening ofimport policy, Iran's IRNA news agency quoted an unnamed Iranian Foreign Ministry source assaying.


The source added that the US Treasury has not yet annulled its permission forthe importing ofPersian rugs, which was resumed inJanuary 2016.

Earlier, a number ofIranian media outlets quoted Razi Miri, deputy head ofthe Iranian Carpet Exporters' Association, assaying that US authorities allegedly imposed a ban onimports ofIranian products and their supply tothird countries.

In October 2016, Hamid Kargar, head ofIran's National Carpet Center, said that sincethe abolition ofthe anti-Iranian international sanctions, Iran has exported about $50 million worth ofhandmade carpets tothe United States.

Accoridng toKargar, Iran has a total of40 carpet designs that each belong toa different geographical region; 29 ofthose designs have been internationally registered inthe World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) inthe last two years.
