President Rouhani: Iran ready to increase anti-terrorism cooperation with EU

FNA- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reiterated his country's preparedness to boost cooperation with the European Union in the fight against terrorist groups.

"Fighting terrorism, extremism and its dangers to the world needs collective cooperation among the countries and Iran is ready to develop its cooperation with the EU in this area," President Rouhani said in a meeting with new Portuguese Ambassador to Iran Joao Jose Corte Real in Tehran on Sunday.

Noting that Iran welcomes expansion of cooperation with the EU in all fields, he stressed that there is no obstacle in the way of the further reinvigoration of ties between Tehran and Lisbon.

"Portugal can also strengthen its banking and insurance cooperation (with Iran) and use the post-nuclear deal opportunities to further accelerate economic cooperation between the two countries," President Rouhani underscored.

In relevant remarks in October, President Rouhani in a meeting with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini underlined the necessity for the cut of aid to the terrorist groups, and called on the EU to use military and political leverage to pressure those states that are supporting the terrorists in the region.

"Today, any support for terrorism means giving hope to the terrorists in the region and the world, and if the EU is not willing, for any reason, to use its military presence to confront the terrorists in the region, using political power to pressure the regional sponsors of terrorists and cutting aid to them will have a remarkable impact in the war on terrorism," President Rouhani said during the meeting in Tehran.

He further warned that terrorist acts in Syria and Iraq mean a major threat to the entire world, and said slow pace in fighting the terrorists in the world will result in the establishment of several terrorist states in the region and North Africa.

Mogherini, for her part, stressed the necessity for campaign against the ISIL and Fatah al-Sham (formerly known as al-Nusra) Front as threats to the world, and said, "The EU needs Iran's cooperation as a key and important power to resolve problems in the region."
