Kuwait imposes visa ban on Five Muslim-Majority countries

Sputnik- Kuwait has ripped a page from the playbook of US President Donald Trump by suspending the issuance of visas for travelers native to Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran.

Tourism, trade, and visitor visas fromthe nations have all been restricted, followingan order fromthe Kuwaiti government toslap a "blanket ban" onpossible migrants.

Observers have pointed outthat most ofthe nations onTrumps list have substantial Muslim populations and are experiencing some form ofeconomic or military conflict. Alex Nowrasteh, ofthe Cato Institute, a right-leaning think tank, writes "foreigners fromthose seven nations have killed zero Americans interrorist attacks onUS soil between1975 and the end of2015." Nowrasteh opined that the measures taken here will have virtually no effect onimproving US national security.

The Kuwaiti government has told would-be migrants tonot apply forvisas fromthe five banned nations, asKuwait City is worried aboutthe possible migration ofradical Islamic terrorists. A group ofmilitants bombed a Shia mosque in2015, killing 27 Kuwaiti nationals. A 2016 survey conducted byExpat Insider ranked Kuwait one ofthe worst nations inthe world forexpatriates, primarily due toits strict cultural laws.
Kuwait was the only nation toprohibit the entry ofSyrian nationals prior toTrumps executive action. Kuwait City previously issued a suspension ofvisas forall Syrians in2011.

As a member ofthe Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Kuwait has become embroiled inescalated tensions betweenthe GCC and Iran. Washington has emerged asa guarantor ofGCC security sincethe early 1990s, according toa Congressional Research Service brief. On Wednesday, Trumps National Security Adviser, retired Gen. Michael Flynn, made a highly unusual appearance ata White House daily briefing inwhich he announced that the US is officially putting Iran onnotice, butdid not detail what the warning entailed.
Flynn cited a recent Houthi attack ona Saudi vessel and ballistic missile weapons testing as "Irans destabilizing behavior acrossthe Middle East," adding that "these are just the latest ofa series ofincidents inthe pastsix months inwhich Houthi forces that Iran has trained and armed have struck Emirati and Saudi vessels, and threatened US and allied vessels transiting the Red Sea."
