India oil import from Iran up to record levels

Sputnik News- Indias oil imports from Iran rocketed to a record high in 2016, after the lifting of sanctions against Tehran opened the countrys economy to international trade.

India's demand foroil is enormous, and Iran had long remained amongits top suppliers, buteconomic relations betweenthe two states were shuttered bysanctions overIran's nuclear program.

Some ofIndia's oil refiners resumed purchasing crude fromIran afterthe latter returned tothe oil market last year, contributing tothe collapse ofwholesale crude oil prices acrossthe globe.

According todata fromship-tracking services, in2016 India imported some 473,000 barrels per day (bpd) fromIran tofeed the former's expanding refining capacity, a significant rise fromthe 208,300 bpd in2015.

In December 2016, imports fromIran were shown tohave grown sharply, fromabout 181,200 bpd a year earlier, toa current 546,600 bpd.

"In most of2016 there was a fight amongGulf producers toincrease their market share and lifting ofsanctions againstIran has intensified that fight," said Ehsan ul Haq, senior analyst atLondon-based consultancy KBC Energy Economics, cited byReuters.

Iran has returned tothe list ofIndia's top oil suppliers, grabbing the fourth-biggest provider slot inApril-June 2016.

India remains the world's third-largest oil consumer. Overall, the country imported 4.3 million bpd ofcrude oil in2016, up7.4 percent fromthe previous year.

India's growing demand foroil is expected tocontinue, withenergy information provider S&P Global Platts forecasting that New Delhi's consumption ofoil will increase by7 to8 percent in2017, outpacing Beijing.
