US minor presence at Astana talks aimed to lessen negotiations role - Lawmaker

Sputnik- Ozturk Yilmaz, a deputy chair responsible for foreign relations of the Turkish Republican People's Party claims that insignificant participation and contribution of the United States to Astana talks on Syria was aimed to undermine their importance for Syria crisis settlement.


MOSCOW (Sputnik) Insignificant participation and contribution ofthe United States toAstana talks onSyria was aimed toundermine their importance forSyria crisis settlement, Ozturk Yilmaz, a deputy chair responsible forforeign relations ofthe Turkish Republican People's Party (CHP), told Sputnik onTuesday.


"In Astana talks the US position is also very important. They try todownplay the role ofAstana meeting. So they did not actively participated inthese talks trying toundermine the efforts being carried outnot undertheir auspices," Yilmaz said.


Yilmaz stressed that although US Ambassador toKazakhstan George Krol participated inAstana talks, he was not active and was just likean observer. He added that fromnow many issues will depend onUS President Donald Trump and his administration attitude towardthe Syrian crisis.

"They wanted tocripple the process inAstana, they stepped back fromparticipation fully withthe view towait the process tobe transferred fromAstana toGeneva, back ontrack where the United States is strong," Yilmaz added.

The intra-Syrian talks, brokered byMoscow, Ankara and Tehran, were held inAstana onJanuary 23-24 and brought the Syrian government and opposition groups face toface forthe first time sincethe beginning ofthe civil war inSyria in2011. The Astana negotiations will be followed bya UN-mediated meeting inGeneva expected totake place onFebruary 8.
