Iran's capital may be relocated due to risk of devastating earthquakes

Sputnik News- The tragic collapse of the Plasco Building in Tehran raises concerns whether the Iranian capital should be relocated from its seismically dangerous region.

Despite the fact that the iconic Plasco Building was constructed in1962 byleading Iranian engineers, a major fire that broke outin the high-rise onJanuary 19 didn't just ravaged the structure; it caused it tocollapse.

The fact that a fire could cause so much destruction prompted the Iranian public towonder what might happen toother buildings inTehran inthe event ofa major earthquake.

Bahram Akkasheh, a prominent geophysicist who is known as 'the father ofIranian seismology', told Sputnik Persian that the authorities should urgently consider either relocating the capital toa less-dangerous area or atleast improve the earthquake resistance ofbuildings inTehran.

"Virtually all ofIrans territory is a seismically active area. About 83 percent ofour cities are located inseismically dangerous areas, withanother 16 percent insomewhat safer territory. Only 1 percent ofour settlements, abouta thousand small towns and villages where the probability ofan earthquake is the smallest, can be considered safe," Akkasheh said.

He further explained that 20 years ago, Irans Supreme National Security Council tasked him toanalyze seismic loading and provide substantial evidence confirming that Tehran is a seismically dangerous zone a task that Akkasheh successfully completed.

"I offered three types ofanti-seismic measures. My first and main proposal was toensure that all buildings have earthquake-resistant structures. The second proposal was toestablish a crisis headquarters tocoordinate relief efforts inthe aftermath ofdevastating earthquakes; and the third proposal was torelocate the capital," the geophysicist said.

He also added that while the crisis headquarters was indeed created, the issue ofcapitals relocation, while initially approved bythen-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was eventually put onhold and apparently abandoned.

But unless proper precautions are taken, a powerful earthquake may wreak untold destruction inTehran, a city witha population of15 million and a considerable seismic load.

"The capitals relocation would be an arduous and lengthy process that may take upto several years tocomplete. On the other hand, if we use funds that could theoretically be allocated forthis task toinstead improve the earthquake resistance ofthe existing buildings, that would be a prudent move. Previously the capital ofIran was located inTabriz (for 50 years), Qazvin (for 40 years), Shiraz (for 16 years) and Isfahan (for 138 years). As forTehran, choosing this city tobe our capital was a big mistake inmy opinion. Alas, our people dont take intoaccount the fact that the main cause ofearthquakes is located belowEarths crust, not aboveit," he said.
