Iran calls for boosting cooperation with Africa

FNA- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi on Tuesday voiced his country's readiness to broaden mutual cooperation with African nations.

"Iran has a positive attitude towards African states as it has the needed capacities to expand bilateral ties," Qassemi said in a meeting with Managing Director of Ivory Coast News Agency Oumou Barry Sana in Tehran on Tuesday.

He reaffirmed foreign ministry's support to exchange reporters between Iran and Ivory Coast.

Ivory Coast is located in west Africa, which gained independence from France in 1960.

In relevant remarks in October, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Ivorian counterpart Abdallah Toikeusse Mabri in a meeting in Tehran underlined further cooperation and coordination in the fight against the terrorist groups.

During the meeting, Zarif and Mabri underscored the necessity for exchanging practical and training experiences in campaign against terrorism.

Zarif, for his part, referred to the abundant areas for mutual cooperation between Iran and Ivory coast, and called for cooperation, specially in the war against drug traffickers.

In the meeting, Mabri described Iran as a big power in the political and economic fields, and said Tehran can be a key partner with Ivory Coast in the energy sector.

He also called for the expansion of cooperation in scientific, agriculture, human rights and fight against terrorism, narcotics and other crimes.

Iranian and Ivorian officials in a meeting in Abidjan in March underlined the need for the further expansion of mutual cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting in Ivory Coast's capital city, Director-General of Iranian Foreign Ministry's Department for African Affairs Hossein Molla Abdollahi and Mabri explored avenues for bolstering and reinvigorating bilateral ties.

The two sides also discussed regional developments and regional crises.

Iran is an observing member of the African Union and has shown an active presence in previous AU summit meetings.

The country is considered as one of the AU's strategic partners along with India, Japan, China, several South American states and Turkey, while Tehran is also believed to be prioritizing promotion of its economic and political ties with the African states.
