Sputnik- As the nationwide ceasefire brokered by Moscow and Ankara has been generally holding in Syria for ten days now, it is largely considered as the best news from the war-torn country in years, giving every chance for the conflict to be finally resolved.
After Moscow-Ankara-Tehran negotiations onSyria, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced onDecember 29 that the Syrian government and armed opposition groups had reached an agreement ona nationwide ceasefire inthe country and onreadiness tostart peace talks.

A nationwide ceasefire inSyria was brokered byRussia and Turkey and later approved bythe United Nations. The ceasefire deal inSyria has been ineffect sinceDecember 30. The truce is expected tobe followed bypeace talks inthe Kazakh capital ofAstana later this month. On Saturday, Russian officials withinthe joint Russian-Turkish ceasefire commission registered 10 violations inSyria over24 hours. The Russian Defense Ministry said that the overall number ofviolations is decreasing, which strengthens trust betweenthe parties tothe ceasefire pact.

Interestingly, this has been the first truce inSyria, inwhich the guarantors are Russia and Turkey, withoutthe involvement ofthe United States.

Despite voting infavor ofthe UN Security Councils approval ofthe Russia-backed plan onthe Syrian peace settlement, Washington seems tobe "sidelined and left outof this [Syrian peace] process," British politician, writer and former MP George Galloway told RT.

"Now the Troika ofIran, Turkey, and Russia working withthe [Syrian President Bashar Assad] regime inDamascus is solving this matter forthemselves, and that is what is deeply humiliating forthe US. If anyone looks more pitiful today thanPresident Obama, it is Secretary [John] Kerry, who has been completely sidelined and left outof this process, because his government only wanted tothrow a spoke inthe wheel ofprogress, rather thanfacilitate progress. So it is no surprise that the parties who really want a settlement have decided todo it withoutthe US onthis occasion," Galloway noted.

The opinion was echoed byTurkish political scientist Emre Ersen, who told Sputnik Radio that "currently we know that the US and UN are largely excluded fromthe new ceasefire process and I don't think that they are very happy aboutthis. Especially considering that Turkey is a member ofNATO."

He also commented onthe similar agreement brokered betweenRussia and the US, which failed inits infancy, and suggested what might hamper the current nationwide ceasefire plan. "We know that the US has provided military support tosome ofthe groups inSyria butit has actually never wanted tobe involved very actively inthe Syrian conflict fromthe very beginning.

Which, intime, has seriously weakened its hand atthe diplomatic table," he said. In an interview withSputnik, the chief adviser tothe Turkish president, Ilnur Cevik, said that the Moscow-Ankara deal onthe Syrian truce "shows the huge potentials forworld peace when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin cooperate so closely." "Erdogan and Putin are seen astwo leaders contributing toMiddle East peace. The ceasefire is the work ofMr. Erdogan and Mr.

Putin and their growing influence onregional issues," he said, adding that "Of course the fact that Iran is also inthe equation will ensure the success ofthe current peace initiatives inSyria." The Syrian ambassador toChina and former envoy tothe US, Dr. Imad Moustapha, told RT that he believes that the nationwide ceasefire "would be a watershed moment inthe course ofthe Syrian crisis." "This deal is offering humanitythe opportunity tostop the bloodshed. So this is a remarkable achievement. We genuinely hope that it will succeed and allowed tobe implemented inas much asrealistically possible way," he concluded.
