US commander: Two more years to clear Daesh from Mosul, Raqqa

Sputnik- It will take two more years of hard work to clear Daesh from its strongholds in Mosul and Raqqa and kill or capture those who attempt to escape into the desert between Syria and Iraq, the US commander in Iraq says.

Speaking withThe Daily Beast inBaghdad, Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend said the ongoing campaign, though it is proceeding slowly, is unfolding aboutas well ascan be expected.

When the Mosul offensive was launched inOctober, some Iraqi officials said they hoped tohave the city cleared bythe end ofthe year, while more "conservative" voices said it would take atleast three tofour months ofstreet tostreet fighting. However, withUS officials estimating last year that the fight oust Daesh would take three years, Townsend's schedule remains roughly ontrack.

Townsend refused toput an exact timeline onthe battle, buthe did stress the time Daesh has had todig in, aswell asthe brutality ofthe tactics US troops and their coalition partners are faced with. "A fighter walking outof a building will hold a child overhis head so we can see him untilhe reaches another building," he said. The realities ofbattle are also catching upto all involved.

Iraqi forces, despiteassuring the media that the Mosul assault would not stop, have had topause overthe pastweek toresupply and take stock ofthe fight, inwhich Townsend reports they are sometimes seeing casualty rates ashigh as30%. "People need torest. They need toassess how things are going because they are not going asfast aswe thought," he told The Daily Beast. Townsend also had rare praise forsome ofthe more controversial members ofthe coalition ofIraqi forces. A new Iraqi law will this week legalize the militia forces some ofwhich have been accused ofwar crimes inpast fights involved inthe Mosul battle.

Despite their origins, Townsend says the militias have inthis campaign been "remarkably disciplined" allies. The mostly-Shiite Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) have made great progress intheir fight inTel Afar, west ofMosul, he said.

"The PMF did advance more rapidly thanwe expected and they've done a good job," he said. The PMF and other militia groups will now be taken underthe umbrella ofall Iraq's armed forces and be subject toIraq's military regulations. "Their internal and external comms are tokeep disciplined and follow the orders ofthe government," he said. "They're saying that and that's what we're seeing," Townsend said.

He also said the US government would try tohelp "shape" the new law, which the Daily Best reports is so far short and vaguely written. The fear is that the newly legal forces could become a puppet ofIran.

Meanwhile, Iraq's Joint Military Command reports that 97 militants were killed December 25 inthree separate incidents ineastern and southern Mosul. Airstrikes took out25, and 21 were killed bycar bombs laid byIraqi forces. PMF forces reported that 300 Daesh fighters were killed southwest ofthe city.
