Erdogan wants to discuss setting of safe zone in Northern Syria with Trump

Sputnik- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday announced his intention to discuss with US President-elect Donald Trump the establishment of a security zone in northern Syria once Trump takes office.

ANKARA (Sputnik) According toErdogan, Ankara would be capable ofkeeping the zone free ofany terrorists' establishments. "I constantly state the need fora Syrian security zone, liberated fromterrorists.

We told the United States, Russia and Iran aboutit. I openly declare that Ankara will create a security zone innorthern Syria, and will not allow a terrorist statehood inthe area. On January 20, the new president will start working inthe United States. We will discuss this withhim," Erdogan said. He added that Turkey was ready tonegotiate withthe United States a joint operation onthe liberation ofSyrian Raqqa fromDaesh militants.

On August 24, Turkish forces, backed byUS-led coalition aircraft, began a military operation dubbed the Euphrates Shield toclear the Syrian border town ofJarabulus and the surrounding area ofDaesh terrorist organization, which is outlawed inRussia. As Jarabulus was retaken, the joint forces ofAnkara, the coalition and Syrian rebels continued the offensive southwest.

The operation has been widely criticized both bythe Syrian Kurds and Damascus, who have accused Ankara ofviolating Syria's territorial integrity.
