How Russia-Turkey-Iran alliance 'already bearing fruit' in Syria

Sputnik- President Vladimir Putins end-of-the-year press conference on Friday where he focused on Russia's foreign and domestic policy, including Russia's relations with the US and the EU, the possibility of a new arms race and the murder of Russian ambassador in Turkey attracted a great deal of interest both in and outside Russia.

During the conference that lasted foralmost four hours Putin mentioned, amongother things, the Turkish and Iranian leaders contribution tothe liberation ofAleppo.

He also praised the role ofthe Russian-Iranian-Turkish trilateral format inthe ongoing efforts toend the war inSyria, while added that the regional interests ofsuch global players asthe US should also be respected.

This [trilateral] format has proved highly effective and viable and we will certainly be promoting it aswe go, Putin noted.

In an interview with Sputnik Persian, independent Iranian expert inregional and global politics Farzad Ramazani Bonesh also underscored the role ofthe Russian-Iranian-Turkish cooperation inthe war onterror. This alliance is already bearing fruit asevident fromthe results ofthe recent meeting bythe three countries foreign ministers inMoscow.

I would also liketo praise the role played byKazakhstan and other countries, which acted asgo-betweens inthe talks betweenthe Syrian government and the opposition, Farzad Ramazani Bonesh said. He mentioned the vicious campaign ofslander unleashed bypro-Western, Turkish and pro-Arab media aboutthe humanitarian situation inAleppo and the distorted picture they painted aboutthe role played byIran, Russia and the Assad government inthe liberation ofSyrias northern capital.

The militant gangs that besieged Aleppo and fought the advancing government forces were jihadist radicals and terrorists all, butthis fact seems tohave been completely lost onmainstream media, he continued. Farzad Ramazani Bonesh added that withAleppo now liberated the alliance ofRussia, Iran and Turkey will be highly effective given Ankaras sway overthe moderate opposition groups innorthern Syria and great deal ofRussian and Iranian influence onDamascus. The close interaction bythese three key regional players holds the key toending the conflict inSyria and stabilizing the situation inthe war-torn Arab country.

If the Turkish authorities end their support forthe so-called moderate fighters inthe north, close their border and stem the tide ofnew jihadist recruits heading toSyria, this would be a big first step towardsa lasting peace and stability inSyria, he emphasized.

For their part, Iran and Russia could act asmediators and guarantors ofa peaceful dialogue betweenthe opposition and President Bashar Assad, Farzad Ramazani Bonesh added.

In an interview with Sputnik Mundo, Jos Mara Gil, a Spanish expert onterrorism atthe International Security Observatory, said that he agreed withVladimir Putin inthat Russia and the West should join hands againstthe terrorist threat.

The lack ofcoordination is one ofthe reasons forthe terrorist attacks weve seen happening inParis, Belgium and other countries. Putin is ready forcooperation but, unfortunately, his call forconcerted action has not been heard yet, he said.

He added that the opponents ofthis cooperation point toRussias actions inAleppo butRussia is not tobe blamed forthe tragic events that happened there. The city was seized byterrorists who committed heinous crimes inSyria and keep doing this now. Russia is not the cause ofthe chaos inSyria and there are no easy ways outof this situation, Jos Mara Gil said.
