Russia-Turkey-Iran talks on Syria 'gleam of hope' for lasting peace - Lawmaker

Sputnik- The Russia-Turkey-Iran format of cooperation provides hope for Syria crisis settlement and preserving territorial integrity and sovereignty of the war-torn country, Ozturk Yilmaz, a deputy chair responsible for foreign relations of the Republican People's Party (CHP), told Sputnik on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) On Tuesday, the foreign and defense ministers ofRussia, Iran and Turkey met inMoscow todiscuss the situation inSyria, including inAleppo. They agreed ina joint statement onthe revival ofthe political process toend the conflict inthe country. The document stressed the importance ofrespecting Syria's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

"First ofall, this is an important development afterso many years ofa civil war. Now we can see a gleam ofhope forthe resolution ofthe Syrian crisis and civil war. It is quite important that the party meeting has a result aboutworking together forthe territorial integrity and sovereignty ofSyria and fight againstterrorism This is changing the format And we have a hope forthe territorial integrity, tothe reservation ofterritorial integrity and sovereignty ofSyria," Yilmaz said.

According toYilmaz, the agreement ofRussian, Turkish and Iranian ministers that regime change inSyria is not a condition forthe crisis settlement is a good development, which means that all parties tothe conflict inSyria could come together inorder towork outa way fortalks and possible peace deal.

Since 2011, Syria has been engulfed ina civil war, followingthe protests that had turned violent, aspart ofthe so-called Arab Spring. Over the recent months, Aleppo became a major battleground inSyria. On December 16, the Russian Defense Ministry's center forSyrian reconciliation said that the Syrian army operation toliberate the eastern neighborhoods ofAleppo was over, and that the Syrian government troops were eliminating separate hotbeds ofmilitant resistance.
