Spokesman: Iran signs 2 documents on N. fusion

FNA- Spokesman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Bahrouz Kamalvandi announced that his country has inked two documents to develop nuclear fusion projects, inching closer to the membership of ITER project.

"We have signed two documents of ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) project. We hope to become a member of the big international project by inking the third document," Kamalvandi told reporters in Tehran on Tuesday.

"Although we are in a good position in the fusion field, considering the human resources, the progress is slow given the old equipment" that Iran is using, he added.

ITER is an internationalnuclear fusionresearch and engineeringmegaproject, which will be the world's largest magnetic confinementplasma physicsexperiment. It is an experimentaltokamak nuclear fusion reactorthat is being built next to theCadarachefacility inSaint-Paul-ls-Durance, south of France.

Director General of France's International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor Bernard Bigot voiced ITER's full endorsement for Iran's membership in the nuclear fusion project, and said both sides would benefit from the outcome of the project.

"The cooperation will have win-win results for both sides," Bigot said in November.

He described the project as the biggest and most up-to-date one in the field of nuclear fusion, and said, "All world countries, specially Iran, could join the project."

Bigot reiterated that Iran as an important and advanced country could have a vital collaboration with the project.
