China guarantees support to Iran in 'standoff between Tehran, Washington'

Sputnik- Iran has won support from China in the face of possible new American sanctions against Tehran. This was one of the main results of Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarifs trip to Asia which ended on December 8. On December 3-8, the diplomat visited India, China and Japan, the three largest buyers of Iranian crude.

On Thursday, duringa press conference inTokyo, Zarif said that the United States and the rest ofthe international community should respect the final agreement onthe Iranian nuclear program. He noted that sanctions againstIran did not work and new sanctions would also be counterproductive.

Earlier, duringhis visit inChina, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Zarif that the terms ofthe agreement betweenIran and six powers should be observed byall parties. The statement was made afterUS Congress passed a bill toextend sanctions againstTehran for10 years.

The document was submitted forsignature toPresident Barack Obama. The American president is expected tosign the bill beforehis presidential term expires onJanuary 20. If Obama signs the bill intoeffect this will be a heavy blow toIrans economic relations withthe international community, according toIrina Fedorova, an expert atthe Institute forEastern Studies atthe Russian Academy ofSciences. "Now, the new possible American sanctions againstIran are inthe spotlight.

There concerns that onexpectations ofnew sanctions Western companies will not increase trade and economic partnership withIran. The same is forChinese firms. But China can bypass those restrictions," Fedorova told Sputnik Chinese.

During a meeting inBeijing, representatives ofChina and Iran reaffirmed their readiness toexpand economic cooperation, investment and banking activities.

Chinas Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli told Zarif that China is interested incooperation withIran withinthe framework ofthe New Silk Road infrastructure project. According toGaoli, afterthe visit byChinese leader Xi Jinping toIran inJanuary, strategic partnership betweenthe two countries reached a new level. In some ways, Beijings rhetoric onthe issue is anti-American, said Ji Kaiyun, an expert atthe Center forIranian Studies atthe Chinese Southwest University.

"Changes inthe US and the tendencies that have emerged afterDonald Trumps win inthe US election make more serious the standoff betweenWashington and Tehran. But Iran has experience inprotecting its right atthe international level. When pressure fromthe US mounted Iran could always find support fromChina. I hope that further contacts withChina will help Iran ease pressure fromthe US," Ji Kaiyun pointed out. He also suggested that ties betweenBeijing and Tehran may evolve tothe level ofthe closest allies.

At the press conference inTokyo, Zarif underscored that possible new sanctions would damage Iran butwill not break the country.

Currently, Irans economic strategy is toreach the pre-sanction export volume and Tehran places bets first ofall onChina, India, Japan and South Korea, the main importers ofIranian crude. Probable, Zarifs trip toAsia was inparticular aimed atreceiving guarantees that the mentioned-above countries will continue todevelop economic ties withIran, despitepolitical tensions. In September, Iran increased crude exports toChina, India, Japan and South Korea by73 percent againstthe same period last year.

This year, Japan increased imports ofIranian oil by80 percent thana year ago. India and South Korea increased imports ofIranian crude two times. Iranian crude exports toChina grew by18 percent. New possible US sanctions againstIran are unlikely toprevent Iran fromexporting crude tothose countries, butthey will definitely affect the stability ofoil incomes. Currently, Iran sees a shortage inresources and technologies needed tomodernize the national oil and gas industry. Zarifs visits toIndia, China and Japan were also aimed tomake clear the role ofeach ofthose countries inthe Iranian national energy strategy.
