Iran ready to host Russia’s optic cables eastward

Press TV- Iran says it is ready to transit optical cables from Russia to China and India in a project which is expected to lead to the creation of an integrated internet service between the four countries.

Iran's Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi told a visiting Russian delegation that a similar optic line had already been installed from Germany to Oman through Iran.

He added that the line would help increase the speed of internet services.

Vaezi told the delegation that comprised representatives of Russian companies active in the information and communication technology (ICT) that Iran is ready to increase the level of cooperation between Russian and Iranian ICT companies.

He emphasized that Iran has to the same effect already taken note of a directive by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin for Russian enterprises to increase exports of ICT services in 2017.

Vaezi – who heads Iran-Russia Joint Economic Commission together with Russia’s Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak – expressed hope that ICT would be top on the agenda of the next session of the Commission.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian minister called on Russia to participate in an agreement between Iran and Azerbaijan regarding electronic commerce.

In response, Russia’s Deputy Minister of Telecom and Mass Communications Rashid Ismailov said he welcomed Iran’s proposal for Russia to cooperate with Tehran and Baku over electronic commerce.

Ismailov emphasized that he would discuss the proposal in Moscow and inform Vaezi about the results accordingly.

The Russian official further expressed hope that relations with Iran – specifically over the ICT sector – would expand in the future.
