Ex-Admiral: US shredding nuclear deal with Iran 'would be a mistake'

Sputnik- The incoming administration of US President-elect Donald Trump should not dismantle Washingtons nuclear deal with Iran, former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mike Mullen said Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The retired Navy admiral, who headed the Joint Chiefs underPresidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, said the United States has seen enough wars inthe Middle East, and he urged the new administration tolook atthe Iran agreement "very carefully." "I think tearing the deal upwould be a mistake," Mullen told attendees atthe Washington Ideas Roundtable organized bythe Aspen Institute.

Mullen added that he has not seen any proposed alternative tothe deal, which was signed inJuly 2015.

Iran and the P5+1 group ofnations the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia plus Germany agreed that inexchange forTehran keeping its nuclear program exclusively forpeaceful uses, there would be a gradual lifting ofsanctions onIran. The agreement took effect onJanuary 16, afterthe International Atomic Energy Agency officially confirmed Irans compliance withthe deals provisions.
