Advisor to Iranian speaker warns Turkey against intervention in Iraq

TEHRAN (FNA)- Senior Advisor to the Iranian Parliament Speaker Hossein Amir Abdollahian warned Turkey against military intervention in Iraq, stressing that such plans merely serve the interests and objectives of Israel that seeks to disintegrate the regional states.

"Our friends dont have a precise understanding of the situation in Iraq. Mosul belongs to Iraq and the country's territorial integrity should be respected and any partnership in the Mosul Liberation Operations should be conducted with the Iraqi government's full consent," Amir Abdollahian said in an interview with Iran-based Arabic-language al-Alam news channel on Monday.

Noting that Turkey is complicating the regional conditions with its ambitions, he said, "We shouldnt allow Israel to start exercising its plot to disintegrate Mosul from the region."

Amir Abdollahian also referred to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's claims about the creation of a buffer zone in Syria to shelter the refugees, and said Syria would be much better off if others helped it improve the conditions for the refugees to return to their homes.

He warned that any attempt to create a buffer zone in Syria is aimed at the disintegration of the region.

Earlier this month, Iran had warned Turkey against the violation of Iraq's sovereignty, stressing that any anti-terrorism effort in the Arab country needs Baghdad's approval.

"Fighting against terrorism in the region and the world is important and it is good if any government fights against terrorism, but we shouldnt violate another country's sovereignty to this end," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi told reporters in his weekly press conference in Tehran last Monday.

"Any partnership in this field should be coordinated with the central government (in Iraq)," he added.

Relations between Turkey and Iraq deteriorated after Turkey dispatched its troops in Iraq allegedly to fight against ISIL in late 2015.

The Turkish government said its forces would participate in the operation on the liberation of Mosul, however, Iraqi authorities claim they had not given their consent for this participation.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi said earlier this month that Turkey has sent troops to Iraq to extend its influence, but not to combat the ISIL terrorist group.

"Turkey does not fight against Daesh, it fights for its interests and extension on influence," Abadi said.

Earlier, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said that Iraq and Turkey reached preliminary agreement on the framework of Turkish military participation in the fight against the ISIL.

Iraqi government spokesman Saad al-Hudaythi said later on the same day that no concrete agreements had been reached yet.
