Iranian, Finnish Presidents discuss Iraq, Syria, campaign against terrorism

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian and Finnish Presidents Hassan Rouhani and Sauli Niinisto in a meeting in Tehran on Wednesday conferred on ways to further expand bilateral ties as well as the latest developments in Iraq, Syria and war on terrorism.

"During this trip (of the Finnish president), we decided to witness (expansion of) desirable banking relations between the two countries in the short run," President Rouhani said in a joint press conference with his Finnish counterpart.

Noting that Tehran and Helsinki enjoy abundant capacities to bolster ties which should be used, he said, "Different fields of energy, transportation, industry, environment, mining and forestry are good grounds for the development of relations."

"Regional issues and the situation dominating Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen were also discussed in today's talks and we underlined the necessity for countries' assistance to the fight against terrorism and political cooperation on humanitarian issues and establishment of stability," President Rouhani said.

Niinisto, for his part, referred to his talks with Rouhani about war on drug trafficking and terrorism, and said, "In out discussions, we emphasized that fighting against these problems needs international cooperation."

President Niinisto arrived in Tehran on Tuesday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a meeting with President Niinisto in Helsinki in July 2016 had extended a formal invitation of President Rouhani to him.

In a relevant development in early June, Tehran and Helsinki held a joint business meeting attended by over 300 businessmen from the two countries.

Heads of Iranian and Finnish chambers of commerce, Zarif and his Finnish counterpart Timo Soini delivered speeches in the meeting.

Finland's economic activists became familiar with the investment opportunities in Iran at the meeting.

Also in late May, Zarif and Finnish Parliament Speaker Maria Lohela in a meeting in Helsinki explored avenues to accelerate expansion of bilateral relations between the two countries.

During the meeting, Zarif underlined that relations between Tehran and Helsinki are moving on the right track at the three levels of governments, parliaments and businesspersons, and expressed the hope that bilateral parliamentary ties would broaden.

Lohela, for her part, underlined the Finnish parliament's preparedness to expand relations with Iran's legislature, and expressed the hope that the Iran-Finland Friendship Group would soon be formed at the new Iranian parliament.
