TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Supreme Leader's top adviser for international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati said sponsors of the terrorist groups in the region are trapped in their miscalculations.

"The countries which support terrorism and those which have created and sponsored the Takfiri and terrorist groups in the region are stuck in their miscalculation and entangled in a situation that they can't get rid of easily," Velayati said in a meeting with a number of Belgian senators in Tehran on Sunday.

He referred to the solutions to the crisis in Syria, and said, "Agreement on the three basic issues of protecting Syria's territorial integrity, cutting interference of foreign powers in the country and accepting the legitimacy of the legal government of Bashar Assad can help terminate the crisis in the country."

Velayati also stressed that respect for the Syrian people's right of self- determination is another vital component of a solution to the Syrian crisis.

In relevant remarks in February, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif blasted certain states for making an instrumental use of terrorist and militant groups to obtain their political ends, cautioning that using terrorist groups as pawns for deeper political agenda could backfire.

"Using terrorists as pawns in politics and diplomacy is unprecedented. It could have dangerous consequences," Zarif said.

He urged certain regional states to stay away from the illusion that they could use military force for political settlement in Syria.
