Turkey Failed to Coordinate Syrian Operation With Russia, Iran

Turkey did not provide any assurances that its military operation in Syria would be coordinated with Russia and Iran, Syrian President Bashar Assad's adviser Bouthaina Shaaban said.

DAMASCUS (Sputnik) Shaaban, who advises the Syrian president onpolitical and information matters, told the Lebanese Al Mayadeen channel onMonday that "no guarantees ofany coordination betweenTurkey, Russia and Iran regarding the deployment ofTurkish forces inSyria" have been provided.

Shaaban stressed that a common agreement ona Turkish operation was not possible betweenthe three sides tobegin with. On August 24, Turkish forces, backed byUS-led coalition aircraft, began a military operation dubbed Euphrates Shield toclear the Syrian border town ofJarabulus and the surrounding area ofthe ISIS terrorist group, outlawed inRussia and many other countries. Turkey also targeted Kurdish forces present inthe area, ordering them tomove east ofthe Euphrates river. Kurds condemned the operation and said it was directed mainly againstthem, while Syria called the operation a violation ofits sovereignty.

Iran is one ofthe allies ofthe Syrian government inthe military conflict withnumerous opposition factions and extremist groups ripping the country apart sinceMarch 2011. Tehran denies direct military involvement inthe conflict claiming that only Iranian military advisers were supporting the Syrian government.

Russia has been conducting an anti-terrorist aerial campaign sinceSeptember last year atthe request ofthe Syrian government.
