Spokesman: No agreement on Syria envisaged without Iran's partnership

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian foreign ministry underlined the necessity for finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Syria, and said "no agreement" will be made on the issue without Tehran's partnership.

"Negotiations and democratic election is the solution to the Syrian issue," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi told reporters in his weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday.

Stressing that Tehran has not changed its positions on Syria, he said, "No agreement will be made on Syria without Iran's partnership."

His remarks came after Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Jaberi Ansari and Syrian President Bashar Assad in a meeting in Damascus earlier this month discussed bilateral ties, and the latest developments in Syria.

During the meeting, Jaberi Ansari and President Assad underlined the need for a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister and Syrian president also discussed bilateral ties and mutual cooperation.

Jaberi Ansari reiterated that Iran is determined to continue providing all possible supports to Syria in its ongoing war on terrorism, and said, "Iran-Syria relations are not merely based on mutual interests, but are also based on a mutual vision and a wise political understanding of the threats to the regions people, more importantly the threats of terrorism and extremism."

President Assad, for his part, underlined the importance of the support provided by Iran, Russia, and other friendly countries in bolstering the steadfastness of the Syrian people in the face of the terrorist war that targets them.

Jaberi Ansari also met Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem.
