IAEA's 60th General Conference to kick off in Vienna on Monday

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will start its annual week-long meeting, the General Conference, at the organization's headquarters in Vienna on Monday.

VIENNA (Sputnik) The General Conference will feature a set ofevents important forthe IAEA operations, fromassessment ofthe agency's work inthe previous years, especially in2015, tothe budgetary issues and discussions onthe IAEAs priorities forthe future.

IAEA Secretary General Yukiya Amano is expected toopen the organization's General Conference witha statement covering the work ofthe UN agency throughthe last 60 years ofits existence. The organization remains committed toits Statute, approved onOctober 23, 1956, that outlined its main goals assisting member states inusing nuclear science forpeaceful purposes aswell asdevelopment and maintenance ofnuclear safety standards and their application. The General Conference is expected toapprove the 2015 Annual Report and other budgetary issues, while the side events will feature the Scientific Forum onNuclear Technology forthe Sustainable Development Goals onSeptember 28-29, the Forum ofthe International Nuclear Safety Group which will take place onMonday, September 26.

The Senior Regulators meeting will take place onThursday witha number ofbilateral meetings ontechnical cooperation betweenmember states tokick offMonday. For example, Russias Rosatom nuclear energy corporation is expected tosign agreements oncooperation inpeaceful use ofatomic energy withCuba and Tunisia.

In the latest years, the situation aroundthe nuclear programs ofIran and North Korea have been ofparticular importance forthe IAEA aswell asthe international society. This year, the General Conference will open just weeks after the September 9 nuclear test byNorth Korea, which is believed tobe the countrys most powerful yet. As ofIran, onJuly 14, 2015, Iran the P5+1 group ofcountries, consisting ofthe United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany, reached the Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction toensure the peaceful nature ofthe country's nuclear program inreturn forthe gradual lifting ofanti-Iran sanctions. The IAEA monitors Tehrans compliance withthe agreement.
