Iran, P5+ 1 officials to discuss JCPOA in New York

The commission monitoring the implementation of the nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers is to convene its fifth meeting in New York.

The Joint Commission is to meet on the sidelines of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at 11:00 local time (03:00 GMT) on Wednesday.

The July 2015 deal, struck between Iran and the world powers, namely Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States, envisaged Tehran scaling back its nuclear program in return for the lifting of all nuclear-related sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

The Wednesday meeting is to gather deputy foreign ministers from the respective countries.

Later in the day, foreign ministers of Iran and the six states are scheduled to discuss the implementation of the landmark nuclear deal.

The first meeting of the commission was held last October in the Austrian capital, during which it was agreed to reconvene every three months.

Months after the accord went into effect in January, the US and the European Union (EU) continued to retain some sanctions on Iran, scaring off companies from resuming trade with the country.

Numerous foreign banks and companies still balk at renewing business and trade ties with the Islamic Republic, fearing US punitive measures. US Republicans have, meanwhile, been pushing through anti-Iran bills in Congress.

Gholam-Ali Khoshroo, Irans Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, meanwhile, said President Hassan Rouhani will broach the issue of commitment to the nuclear agreement, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in his upcoming speech at the UN General Assembly.

The president will address the issue of commitment to the JCPOA and the expectations [that the country has] from the opposite side, he said.

Tehran has fully lived up to its commitments stipulated in the deal, the envoy asserted.
