Zarif leaves Tehran for Margarita

Tehran, Sept 13, IRNA - Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif departed, on Tuesday morning, Tehran for Margarita Island, Venezuela, where he will take part the 17th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).


Zarif is heading a delegation of experts, consisting his deputies Abbas Araqchi and Majid Takht-e Ravanchi.

The NAM expert-level meeting is to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday and the foreign ministers from 120 member states will convene on Thursday and Friday.

President Hassan Rouhani is also due to travel to Venezuela on Friday to attend a NAM summit meeting which is slated to be held on Saturday and Sunday.

The Presidential Office deputy chied for communications and information Parviz Esmaeili said that Rouhani, as the rotating president of the NAM, will confer presidency of the NAM to the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The president will also meet and confer with a number of heads of state on the sidelines of the event, Esmaeili said.

After the NAM Summit, the president will leave Venezuela for Cuba upon an official invitation by his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro, Esmaeili added.

Apart from meeting the Cuban president, Rouhani is also scheduled to meet Fidel Castro, the leader of the Cuban Revolution.

Then, the president will leave Havana for New York where the 71st UN General Assembly annual meeting is to be held.
