New power units of Iran's Bushehr NPP to help solve fresh water issue

Two new power units of the Iranian Bushehr nuclear power plant (NPP), which will be built with the involvement of Russia, will help solve the problem of local fresh water supply, the chief of Irans Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) said on Saturday.

BUSHEHR (Sputnik) The Bushehr 2 project was rolled outby Russian nuclear experts inTehran in2014. Russia and Iran signed a deal tobuild the second and third reactors atthe site insouthern Iran inNovember that year, withan option ofbuilding six more inthe future. Earlier inthe day, a ceremony devoted tothe start ofthe construction was held inBushehr. "The volume ofdesalted water will amount to200 million cubic meters ofwater, and the current demand [in the province] is 50,000 60,000 cubic meters," Ali Akbar Salehi stated ata press briefing, specifying that the new power blocks would be paired witha desalination plant, which would help resolve the issue offresh water supply inBushehr province.

Bushehr is Irans first nuclear power plant. The construction started in1975, butwas suspended amidthe 1978-1979 Iran's Islamic revolution and the Western sanctions againstTehran, asGermany, responsible forthe Bushehr construction, joined the United States inrestrictive measures againstTehran.

Irans deal withRussia onthe first stage ofthe Bushehr project, Bushehr 1, goes back to1992. The nuclear power plant witha single 1,000-megawatt light water reactor was connected tothe national electric grid in2011 and reached full capacity the followingyear.
