VP: Implementation of JCPOA needs all sides' commitments

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri underlined that the nuclear agreement reached between Tehran and the six world powers (the US, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany) will succeed if all sides fully comply with their undertakings.

"The commitment to the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) depends on the commitment of all sides," Jahangiri said on Saturday, addressing the opening ceremony of the start of construction operation of the second and third units of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.

The Iranian first vice president pointed to the importance and the need for gaining access to advanced technologies, and said, "Out peaceful use of the nuclear technology has been misunderstood by the big powers in recent years, and for the same reason huge economic, political and social costs have been imposed on the Iranian nation."

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi delivered the keynote address at the Saturday event in the southern city of Bushehr.

The plant started operating in Iran in 2011 and reached full capacity the following year. Construction of the first unit was officially completed in April.

"We are opening a new page in the trend of our peaceful industrial nuclear activities," Salehi said.

"We are going to launch the construction of two new power plant units at the nuclear power plant of Bushehr."

"Thanks to the efforts of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the ground has been paved to further utilize the peaceful nuclear technology in light of the guidelines of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, and also within the framework of the Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in line with the Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Iranian official stated.

In relevant remarks in mid-August, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif underlined that a Joint Commission would hold a session soon to discuss the US disloyalty to the JCPOA.

"We will have another session of the Joint Commission to discuss the US violation of commitments and some other issues in the near future," Zarif told reporters.

The Iranian foreign minister noted that the commission has convened whenever deemed necessary, and said, "Necessary solutions to problems have always been worked out during the meetings."

Earlier in August, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister and senior negotiator Seyed Abbas Araqchi warned the US and other world powers against breaching the contents of the nuclear deal signed with Tehran last year.

"There are still some laggings, negligence and disloyalty by the other side and we confront them very strongly and remind the other side of its responsibilities," Araqchi said after meeting the Iranian legislators in Tehran.

Stressing that Iran will pursue and act against any shortcomings and lagging of the world powers in implementing the nuclear deal, he said that if needed, the legal procedures stated in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the nuclear deal) will be paved (in case of facing the other sides' violation of the agreement).
