DM stresses Iran’s efforts to develop arms technology

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan underlined his ministry’s cooperation with 100 academic centers to produce more state-of-the-art weapons and equipment by the country’s defense industry.

“Today, over 1,000 knowledge-based companies and 100 universities in Iran are actively cooperating with the defense ministry to strengthen the country’s defense power and enhance its deterrence level,” General Dehqan said, addressing a meeting with senior Iranian legislators in Tehran on Monday.

He also said that the quality and quantity of the Iranian defense industry’s products have highly increased after arms and equipment standards were promoted, making them smarter and safer, increasing their agility and facilitating their deployment, operation, and maintenance and repairs.

Also, General Dehqan on Sunday announced the country’s plans to supply the Army with home-made torpedoes and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) forces with modern speedboats that cruise at a speed of over 60 knots per hour.

“We have taken good steps in the production of subsurface vessels and torpedoes and this year, we will deliver the first batch of torpedoes to the Army forces,” Dehqan said, addressing a ceremony to unveil the home-made turbojet in Tehran on Sunday.

He said that the production of the turbojet will enable Iran to build 20 helicopters annually.

Noting that Iran has also built speedboats which can cruise at a speed of over 60 knots per hour and have been equipped with missiles, General Dehqan said that the IRGC Navy will be supplied with the speedboats this year.

He also said that the country’s capacity to produce light weapons has now increased to 500,000 from 24,000 three years ago.

His remarks came after Commander of the IRGC Navy Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi declared in May that the IRGC has done all the necessary tests and will soon launch mass-production of speedboats that cruise at a speed of 80 knots (148 kilometers) per hour.

“We have been able to increase the speed of our military vessels which are equipped with missiles and torpedoes up to 80 knots and this speed was tested late winter and now we are after mass-producing them,” Fadavi said.

“This is while the speed more than 35 knots is a dream for the world naval forces and the US vessels can cruise at a maximum speed of 31 knots,” he added.
