Eurasia's integration: North-South corridor may soon replace Suez Canal

In addition to the China-led New Silk Road, Eurasian players are boosting the development of the North-South International Transport Corridor which aims to connect South Asian countries with North and Western Europe. Remarkably, Russia is regarded as the backbone of the two projects.





The latest trilateral summit ofAzerbaijan, Iran and Russia inBaku has indicated the powers' intention toboost strategic cooperation and accelerate the development of the North-South International Transport Corridor project.
"A huge flow ofgoods will soon cross the Russian Federation not only fromthe East tothe West [via New Silk Road], butalso fromthe South tothe North. Moscow is opening the door forSouth Asian countries," Russian online media outlet PolitRussia.com reports, commenting onthe matter.


The North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC) is the ship, rail and road route which aims toincrease transit and foreign trade freight flows withinthe Eurasian continent.


The initiative toconnect the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf tothe Caspian Sea and beyondto North and Western Europe viathe Russian Federation was kicked offback inSeptember 2000 inSt. Petersburg byRussia, Iran and India. The agreement was ratified bythe founding states in2002.

The new corridor, which is stretching for7,200 kilometers (4,478 miles), offers a number oftangible benefits forthe participants ofthe project.

However, its major advantage compared toother transport routes, most notably the Suez Canal, is that it will reduce the transportation distance atleast byhalf, thereby cutting the transit time and cost.

The North-South ITC is regarded asthe Suez Canal competitor, PolitRussia.com notes, adding that the Canal, which is connecting the European and the Asian economic zones, fails tomeet the increasing needs ofthe growing cargo flow.

According tosome estimates, currently about10 percent ofthe world seaborne trade passes throughthe Suez Canal. However, withthe sanctions onIran lifted this figure may increase dramatically, threatening toturn the Canal intoa "bottleneck" forglobal trade.

In light ofthis the new North-South corridor could bear the Canal's growing burden.

Remarkably, a 3,000 km (1,864 ml) part ofthe North-South ITC passes throughthe territory ofRussia. The land section ofthe corridor runs alongRussia's railways fromthe Finnish border tothe Caspian Sea.
"In developing transit and foreign trade freight flows alongthe North-South corridor, the core focus is the railway line betweenBuslovskaya St. Petersburg Moscow Ryazan Kochetovka Rtishevo Saratov Volgograd Astrakhan, a distance of2,513 km," the Russian Railroad's official website highlights.


As ofyet, the corridor still lacks about172 km ofrailroad track betweenAzerbaijan and Iran.


However, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev asserted his counterparts duringthe meeting inBaku that the section will be soon completed,according toRIA Novosti.

Nevertheless, in2015 the volume offoreign trade cargo transported throughthe North-South ITC amounted to7.3 million tones, marking a 4 percent increase incomparison with2014.
"The North-South Corridor project laid a basis forcooperation betweenregional countries toachieve the goal ofregional development. This transportation route links India toEurope viaa safer and shorter path and a very important one forIran, Azerbaijan and Russia," Jahangir Karami, Associate Professor ofInternational Relations atthe University ofTehran, told Valdaiclub.com.


It should be noted, that besidesRussia, Iran, India and Azerbaijan the North-South Corridor project is expected toinclude Armenia, Belarus, Ukraine, Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Iraq, Oman, Syria and Turkey.


PolitRussia.com notes that given Turkey's close relations withAzerbaijan the new route is likely tobenefit Ankara a lot. On the other hand, it would bolster the Russo-Turkish rapprochement.

The media outlet calls attention tothe fact that a 2015 "adventurous anti-Russian" project which envisioned the creation ofthe route fromChina toTurkey bypassing Russia appears tobe less attractive inthe eyes ofAnkara thanthe North-South ITC.
Meanwhile, the security ofthe Caucasus and the Middle Eastern region has acquired a new meaning inthe context ofthe new transport corridor implementation. Thus far, the establishment of the permanent Russian airbase inSyria will play an important role not only forMoscow's military and humanitarian missions inthe region butwill also serve asa key forsustainable economic growth ofthe Middle East.


Along withthe New Silk Road (One Belt, One Road) initiative, the North-South International Transport Corridor will boost the integration ofthe Eurasian space, ensuring the rapid economic growth ofEurasia's regional players aswell asstability and security onthe continent.
