‘Next US admin. to OK Iran plane deals’

Speculations are rising in the media that Iran’s deals with global plane makers Airbus and Boeing may not be decided on by the administration of US President Barack Obama and both deals could be approved by the Treasury Department only when a new administration is in office.

Reuters in a report has quoted aviation industry experts as saying that the Treasury is not expected to approve the deals until after the US presidential election in November.

They have emphasized that the campaign season is “not the time to push it”, adding that the due proceedings could only move ahead “once we have a resolution of who the president is”.

In January, Iran signed a major contract with European aviation giant Airbus worth about $27 billion to buy 118 planes within the next few months. The contract was signed during the visit to Paris by Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani.

Iran also sealed a deal in June worth around $25 billion with the US aerospace heavyweight, Boeing, for the purchase of 100 passenger planes.

The deal with Boeing is still facing a possible ban by Congress in what many see as a result of the growing anti-Iran measures adopted by US lawmakers.

Reuters has quoted Airbus spokesman Stefan Schaffrath as saying that the company was working with US authorities to ensure that all its activities complied with applicable laws and regulations.

It has also quoted John Dern, a Boeing spokesman, as saying that the company is continuing to talk with approved Iranian airlines, that all its actions to date have been licensed by the US government and that any final agreements also would need approval.
