IKCO, Germany’s MAHLE to produce car engines

TEHRAN, Aug. 03 (MNA) – Iran Khodro Automaker company (IKCO) and MAHLE GmbH of Germany have inked a contract to design and produce a type of 3-cylinder car engines.

The bilateral deal was signed in line the global approach towards use of turbocharged three-cylinder engines with more power and at the same time lower fuel consumption and emissions.

The engines to be designed and manufactured under the newly-sealed deal will enjoy 120 to 160 horsepower (hp) and 285 newton metre (Nm) of torque while meeting emission standards of Euro 6.

Fuel consumption of 4.7 liters per hundred kilometers per unit of production will be reduced to 4 liters per hundred kilometers in the basket.

Speaking the contract signing ceremony, Iran Khodro Industrial Group (IKCO) CEO and President, Hashem Yekeh-Zareh said the new venture will reduce the gas between Iran’s automotive industry and the world’s top automakers adding “in the joint project, four families of engines will be produced which will be cover majority of IKCO’s production in future.”

“The engines will be manufactured with top global technology and the contract will be implemented in such a way that requires complete transfer of technology and the second to fourth types of motors will be designed by IKCO experts,” he underlined.

Yekeh-Zareh estimated that the process of designing and manufacturing will last for 30 to 33 months while after the design and trial production phases, mass production will begin with a circulation of 350 thousand engines a year.

He deemed reduction of product development time from 46 to 30 months as one advantage of the new cooperation with the German side emphasizing “the total project is worth 57 million dollars and it will be carried out by IKCO engineers and experts."

The official recalled that the proposed engine performance specifications perfectly match the needs of Iran Khodro industrial group, while the functional specifications of the engine like power, torque and fuel consumption are even more favorable than in the engines used by competitors.

An automotive parts manufacturer based in Stuttgart of Germany, MAHLE GmbH is one of the largest automotive suppliers worldwide.

As a manufacturer of components and systems for the combustion engine and its periphery, the company is one of the three largest systems suppliers worldwide for engine systems, filtration, electrics, mechatronics, and thermal management.
