Azerbaijan ready to implement electricity corridor with Iran, Russia

Azerbaijani Energy Minister Natig Aliyev said that Azerbaijan is technically fully prepared to join the North-South energy corridor connecting Iran and Russia.

BAKU (Sputnik) Azerbaijan is prepared tointegrate its electric grid intothat ofthe North-South energy corridor connecting Iran and Russia, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Natig Aliyev said Thursday.

"The August meeting betweenthe presidents ofAzerbaijan, Russia and Iran will be promising interms ofresolving a number ofissues, achieving concrete results and completing the project inthe nearfuture. Azerbaijan is technically fully prepared tojoin its energy system withthat ofRussia and Iran," the minister said inan article published byAzerbaijan's official newspapers.

The sides are currently indiscussions onkick-starting a trilateral working group that would deal withtechnical and organizational aspects ofintegrating the electric grids ofRussia, Iran and Azerbaijan, he added, noting that Iran is expected toreceive upto 700 megawatts ofenergy per year once the linkup is complete.

"Given that the Iranian system is synchronized withArmenia's, trilateral work continues onthe technical aspects ofmatching the operation ofthe Azerbaijani, Russian and Iranian systems The next trilateral meeting onthe matter will take place inMoscow," Aliyev said.

In December, Armenia, Georgia, Iran and Russia signed a memorandum onincreasing control overthe mutual exchange ofelectric energy, which included stipulations onthe creation ofa North-South energy corridor. In April, the four countries' energy ministers agreed toa roadmap tocreate the corridor by2019.
