Iran: No substitute for Assad Gov't

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi underlined the necessity for finding a peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria, but meantime, said no alternative is envisaged for President Bashar al-Assad's government.

"The Syrian issue has no military solution. The interfering policies in the region have destroyed the economic structures of the country and it has fully become clear that the Syrian government has not and will not have any substitute," Qassemi said in a meeting with Chief Editorial Writer of Kyodo News Agency Hiroki Sugita in Tehran on Tuesday.

Expressing regret of certain countries' double-standard approach in fighting against terrorism and dividing the terrorists into good and bad groups, he said, "Certain states use their oil revenues to destroy the region."

In relevant remarks in May, Iranian Supreme Leader's Top Adviser for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati underscored his country's continued support for Syria's campaign against terrorism, and stressed that President Assad is the only one who can fight and defeat the terrorists and save his nation.

"It is not easy for a country to resist a global war for five years and yet attain victory," Velayati said, praising the Syrian government's excellent job in the last several years of war against terrorism.

He, meantime, said that if Syria is disintegrated and its government falls and the Takfiris, who are linked with Israel, Saudi Arabia and the US, dominate the country, it will adversely affect both Lebanon and Iraq.
